A step up
9×9 Medium · 30 puzzles
Thirty-six digits are given. Most puzzles still fall to “which number is missing?”, and five of them (4, 5, 9, 11 and 30) also ask you to find the only square left for a digit.

Made to be read at arm’s length
- Older adults. A quiet, screen-free puzzle for the kitchen table, a waiting room or a group activity hour. Name and Date lines at the top make it easy to keep track of finished pages.
- Low-vision readers. Given digits are bold and solid black, box lines are about 1 mm thick, and there is no shading or colour anywhere on the puzzle pages. Each grid is about 18 cm across, so empty squares are big enough to write in with a felt-tip pen.
- Beginners of any age. The 4×4 and 6×6 books teach the one rule of Sudoku before the full 9×9 grid. All four books can be solved without pencil marks.
- Classrooms and libraries. One puzzle per page means a whole group can work on the same puzzle, and loose pages work well on a stress-relief table during exam week.
Printing
How to print them well
- Paper: choose the PDF that matches your paper, US Letter or A4. Plain white copy paper works. Heavier paper (24 lb / 90 g/m²) is easier to write on and lets less of the next page show through.
- Scale: print at Actual size or 100%. Choose Fit to page only if your printer cuts off the edges. The page has a margin of about 1.4 cm, so most printers will not need it.
- One-sided: turn off double-sided printing. Puzzles stay clean, nothing shows through from the back, and each page can be handed out on its own.
- Answers last: the answer pages come after the puzzles. For handouts, print only the puzzle pages: pages 1–20 of the 4×4 and 6×6 books, or pages 1–30 of the 9×9 books.
- Even bigger: to print on 11×17 in (Tabloid) paper, scale the Letter PDF to 129%. To print on A3, scale the A4 PDF to 141%.
- Photocopying: copy at 100%. If the copier makes the lines grey, use a darker setting.
Difficulty
What “Easy” and “Medium” mean here
Each level sets how many digits are given. After the puzzles were made, a logic solver worked through every one of them the way a person would and recorded the hardest step it needed.
| Book | Given digits | What it takes | Pencil marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4×4 Easy | 10 of 16 | All 20: “which number is missing?” | Not needed |
| 6×6 Easy | 18 of 36 | All 20: “which number is missing?” | Not needed |
| 9×9 Easy | 42 of 81 | All 30: “which number is missing?” | Not needed |
| 9×9 Medium | 36 of 81 | 25 puzzles: “which number is missing?” 5 puzzles (4, 5, 9, 11, 30) also need “where can this digit go?” | Not needed |
- “Which number is missing?”
- An empty square whose row, column and box already contain every other digit. Only one digit is left, so it goes there. Puzzle-makers call this a naked single.
- “Where can this digit go?”
- Pick a digit and one box, row or column. If the digit fits in only one empty square there, it goes in that square. This is a hidden single.
A good path is 4×4 → 6×6 → 9×9 Easy → 9×9 Medium. None of these books needs guessing. Every puzzle has exactly one solution.

Checked
How the puzzles were checked
- The PDFs were made by this site’s own Sudoku maker, with large print set to one puzzle per page. The same settings online produce the same puzzles.
- While generating, each puzzle is solved again after every digit is removed. A digit stays removed only if exactly one solution is left.
- The finished files were then checked by a separate program. It read every digit back out of all eight PDFs, solved each puzzle again and compared the result with the printed answer key. All 100 puzzles, in both paper sizes, have one solution, and every answer is correct.
